24″ x 36″ woodcut on bright white Stonehenge paper hand printed in a limited edition of 20 impressions.
This piece takes its inspiration from the Scaled Quail. Found in arid regions of the Southwest United States, the Scaled Quail has a distinct crest on the top of its head that looks like a high-top hairdo. I wanted to juxtapose the little quail with a vast and awe-inspiring natural element. The pointed head reminded me of the tallest mountain in Japan, Mt. Fuji. Borrowing elements familiar in ukiyo-e images, I attempted to make the quail appear regal and intimidating. Three separate woodblocks were used to print “Fuji,” resulting in a seven color combination.

i decided to create this image after the feedback i got from my “john lennon” piece which i completed close to a year ago. it was supposed to be a one-off image but my twitter and facebook followers (friends and family too) thought i should follow it up with the three other beatles. months later the next piece i got around to (naturally) was this ”paul maccartney” and everyone loved it. a few more months passed and i finally got around to working on this piece which i just completed the other day. so now the only one left is ringo…poor ringo, always last on the list.
